ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN, APRIL 15 _ SPA _ Pakistan has underscored the need for interpreting and applying the 'Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism' in a manner fully compatible with requirements of international law applicable in armed conflict, its principles and rules of international humanitarian law. This was stated by the Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Munir Akram while speaking in the UN General Assembly, following the adoption of the Convention by consensus, an official statement said. In his explanation of vote, Akram called for maintaining a distinction between counter-terrorism and non-proliferation. The ambassador underscored the need for a comprehensive strategy against terrorism, which would effectively address the root causes of terrorism. Akram called for evolving a definition of terrorism by consensus, which should not prejudice the legitimate rights of people to struggle against foreign occupation and for self-determination and must not exclude state terrorism. --more 1300 Local Time 1000 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/254786
