Ambassador Al-Maalami further said, the Kingdom's previous support for the nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5 + 1 countries was based on its firm belief in the need to work on anything that would limit the spread of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East and the world, however, Iran exploited the economic revenues of lifting the sanctions off it and used them to continue its destabilizing activities in the region, especially through its development of ballistic missiles and support for terrorist groups in the region, including Hezbollah and Al-Houthi militia which used Iran's capabilities to target civilians in the kingdom and Yemen in addition to their repeated threats to international shipping corridors. He said, the Kingdom calls on the international community to adopt a firm and united stance towards Iran and its hostile actions to destabilize the region, calling on Tehran to cease supporting terrorism and abide by UN Security Council resolutions on ballistic missiles, particularly Security Council resolution 2231, and stop interfering in the affairs of other countries in the region. Al-Malaami also reiterated the kingdom's assertion that the elimination of nuclear weapons constitutes a sure guarantee against its use or threat of use, expressing the Kingdom's welcoming of the adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons last year and its hope that this treaty would contribute to the enhancement of international peace and security. --SPA 23:50 LOCAL TIME 20:50 GMT 0043 www.spa.gov.sa/w757156
