Riyadh, May 09, 2022, SPA -- The Permanent Committee of International Humanitarian Law organized today an event marking the International Humanitarian Law Day, which falls on May 9 of each year, held for the first time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, at the headquarters of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority in Riyadh. In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Chairman of the Media and Publication Committee of the Permanent Committee Dr. Hamdan Al-Juhani, the Chairman of the Permanent Committee of International Humanitarian Law Dr. Jalal Al-Owaisi, said that introducing international humanitarian law and disseminating its principles and ideas has become a necessary and urgent matter at present, stressing that Saudi Arabia was one of the first countries that realized the importance of this law and was keen to ratify it eight decades ago, through the establishment of the Permanent Committee of International Humanitarian Law in 2007, and included it within the curricula of military institutes and colleges in the Kingdom. Dr. Al-Owaisi reiterated that the principles of this law, which are an extension of Islamic law, are the best solution to stop armed conflicts and end disputes in the world, through what it bears of spreading and consolidating the values of coexistence, tolerance, and acceptance of the other, and building a world based on fraternity, cooperation, and peace. During the event, a film was screened highlighting the efforts of the Permanent Committee of International Humanitarian Law in 1443 AH. The Permanent Committee of International Humanitarian Law was established by a cabinet decision in 1428 AH, with the representation of more than 12 government agencies headed by the Red Crescent Authority, including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Guard, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economy and Planning, Ministry of Media, the General Intelligence Presidency, and the Human Rights Commission. --SPA 15:59 LOCAL TIME 12:59 GMT 0023 www.spa.gov.sa/w1730158
