Saudi Arabia Wins WFP Executive Board Seat for Fourth Consecutive Time until 2023

Rome, Dec. 04, 2019, SPA -- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has won the Executive Board seat of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) for the fourth consecutive time for the period 2020-2023, among 36 states of the UN and the European Union. The announcement was made today in Rome, the capital city of Italy. Speaking on the occasion, Abdulrahman Abdulmohsen A. Al-Fadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, said that the ongoing support of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and HRH the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for humanitarian and relief fields was a major reason for the Kingdom's win. Al-Fadley added: "Saudi Arabia will continue supporting the WFP and other UN agencies to carry out their humanitarian duties towards vulnerable countries and people in light of the Islamic teachings and principles". For his part, the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the FAO, Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, said that the Kingdom has provided more than $ 93 billion in aid to more than 124 countries in humanitarian, charitable and development areas. Adding that the Kingdom has a leadership role in humanitarian efforts to help the less unfortunate people around the world. Al-Ghamdi also highlighted the fruitful partnership between King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) and WFP to provide humanitarian relief and assistance, pointing out that this support is a continuation of the Kingdom's efforts in this area to further its global mission. Al-Ghamdi thanked the General Supervisor of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah on the ongoing monitoring of the Center's leading position and activities to support people in stressed conditions around the world. It is noteworthy that the Kingdom is an active member of the WFP and WFP Executive Board. The Board comprises 36 States and the European Union, which is the supreme governing body of WFP, and provides intergovernmental support, policy direction and supervision of the activities of WFP.
