SG of OIC welcomes lifting of US sanctions on Sudan

Jeddah, Muharram 16, 1439 H., October 6, 2017, SPA -- The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen, expressed satisfaction over the decision issued today by the US administration to lift the sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1997. In a statement, he stressed that this decision contributes significantly to peace, security, stability and economic growth in Sudan, whose people have been affected by many of these unilateral sanctions and constitute a strong push for the normalization of bilateral relations between Sudan and America in all fields. He added that the General Secretariat of the OIC, for its part, called on the US Administration in all its decisions at the summit level and the Ministerial Council to lift without delay all sanctions imposed on the Sudan and adopted in this regard a joint initiative with the African Union and the Arab League. Al-Othaimeen praised the efforts of the member countries that contributed to this achievement, led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries. The Secretary-General called on the two sides to continue bilateral dialogue in order to achieve the desired results, stressing the importance of the US administration taking another step to remove the name of Sudan from the US list of countries sponsoring terrorism in view of the efforts exerted by Sudan in the fight against terrorism at the regional and international levels. --SPA 03:21 LOCAL TIME 00:21 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w506281
