New Delhi, Muharram 23, 1438, October 24, 2016, SPA -- At least 21 Maoist rebels were killed in a clash with police in south-eastern India Monday, dpa reported. Members of Andhra Pradesh state police's anti-Maoist force, the Greyhounds, attacked a Maoist camp in the forests of Malkangiri district, where about 60 militants gathered for a meeting. "The gunbattle broke out early Monday and lasted for nearly an hour. Sixteen men and five women from the Maoist cadre were killed," Andhra Pradesh Director General Police (Law and Order) RP Thakur said. "A Greyhound commander and a police officer were also injured," he said on phone from state capital Hyderabad. Police suspect that senior Maoist leaders could be among the dead. Police forces were continuing search operations to track down the rebels who had retreated into the forests after the gunbattle. Ammunition and weapons including automatic rifles were seized. --SPA 12:49 LOCAL TIME 09:49 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
