On the ninth of December 2006, the late Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud opened the meetings of the 27th supreme council of the GCC, at Al-Dareya palace in Riyadh. Welcoming the leaders, late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz announced that the meeting will be named after late Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah of Kuwait (Jaber summit) as it is the first following his sad demise in recognition of his noble deeds in the service of the GCC countries and peoples. The late Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques noted that the meeting constitutes an annual chance for the leaders to revise what has been achieved over the previous year and what has not. He said that the Arab region is engulfed by several dangers, looking like a gunpowder-filled tank pending a spark to set it ablaze. Accordingly, we have no choice but to go united with one voice that reflects all the peoples and countries of the Gulf, he was quoted as telling the GCC leaders. He added that it is still more remains to be done in the field of economic unity of the GCC and still we need to see more evidence that a GCC citizen is being treated wherever he moves in the other GCC member states as though he is in his country.
