New Delhi, Shawwal 03, 1435, July 30, 2014, SPA -- A court in India sentenced 10 people to jail Wednesday for a school fire in which 94 children were killed in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in 2004, dpa quoted news reports as saying. Judge Mohamed Ali sentenced the owner, Pulavar Palanichamy to life imprisonment, the Times of India reported. Seven members of the school management including Palanichamy's wife and the school headmistress were jailed for 10 years each, the report said. Two other accused were sentenced to five years in jail. The court found them guilty of charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and imposed a fine of 5.1 million rupees (85,000 dollars). In July 2004, a fire broke out in the school's kitchen and spread, trapping many children in the fire. Investigations found that basic fire safety rules were ignored. There were no fire extinguishers and the school that had 900 students had only one exit, according to broadcaster NDTV. -- SPA 15:48 LOCAL TIME 12:48 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
