RIYADH — Saudi Arabia was not affected by the recent earthquake that shook Turkey on Monday night, which had a magnitude of 6.4, the official spokesperson for the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) Tariq Aba Al-Khail confirmed. Aba Al-Khail said the Kingdom was not affected by the recent earthquake due to the far distance between the earthquake site and the northern border of the country. As for the cause of the earthquake in Turkey, Aba Al-Khail said that it occurred due to the collision of the Anatolian tectonic plate with its African and Arab counterparts, along the seismically active Anatolian rift in the western direction. There will also be aftershocks following the main earthquake, with a smaller seismic magnitude, Aba Al-Khail predicted, stressing that it too will not affect Saudi lands. It is noteworthy that a 6.4 magnitude earthquake has struck southern Turkey on Monday, weeks after a deadly quake devastated the region.
