Geneva, January 21, 2020, SPA -- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia affirmed its continuous support for the works of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament and its constructive efforts to adopt a comprehensive and balanced work program. In his speech before the Conference on Disarmament 2020, Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, the Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, wishes all success of this session in restoring the effective role of the conference to play its role in negotiating the international treaties and agreements in the field of disarmament. "The Kingdom's affirmation of the importance of consolidating and supporting all United Nations multilateral mechanisms, including the Conference on Disarmament, is an extension of the Kingdom's consistent and firm policy to enhance cooperation to prevent all types of weapons of mass destruction and their proliferation. The Kingdom contributes all efforts to make the Middle East free of all these weapons," he said, stressing the necessity of all states' adherence to the obligations of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). "The conflicts in the Middle East have taken an upward curve that threatens the international peace and security. The international community must take the necessary measures to defuse these existing tensions," ambassador Al-Wasil affirmed, disclosing that the weapons used in these conflicts caused humanitarian, environmental and economic damages at the regional and international scopes. "The international community has also silently monitored the terrorist attacks that targeted the Kingdom's oil installations in Abqaiq and Khurais during last September through the use of drones. These attacks clearly indicate Iran's involvement in these heinous and terrorist operations. In this regard, the Kingdom strongly condemns this coward attack. The Kingdom’s government will take all necessary measures in accordance with the relevant international laws and norms,” he said, pointing out that Iran has adopted everything that threatens the security of the region, particularly with regard to the delivery of ballistic missiles and their techniques as well as a technology of drones to the terrorist organizations, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthi militias in Yemen. "Iran’s renunciation of its obligations related to the nuclear agreement by declaring the resumption of uranium enrichment, developing centrifuges and producing heavy water in quantities that exceed the agreed upon represent a clear threat to stability and security in the region," Al-Wasil asserted, affirming that the Kingdom had previously warned after signing the nuclear agreement and also warned against the lack of credibility with the Iranian regime to abandon its nuclear ambitions. He explained that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has paid great attention to accede to the conventions and treaties that seek to preserve the international peace and security, asserting the Kingdom's full commitment to implement all resolutions issued by the Security Council related to disarmament issues. --SPA 18:44 LOCAL TIME 15:44 GMT 0028 www.spa.gov.sa/w1250827
