Secretary General of Arab League Expresses Concern over Escalation in Libya

Cairo, April 29, 2019, SPA -- The Arab League has expressed serious concern over the military and political escalation in Libya, expressing the League's position in rejecting the military intervention, and confirming that the political dialogue is the only way to end the Libyan crisis. Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit denounced in a statement the continuation of military operations in Libya especially around the capital, Tripoli, and western parts of Libya. He also renewed the call to the Government of National Accord and Libyan National Army to commit to humanitarian truce to stop the bloodshed especially during the holy month of Ramadan. He added that the Libyan leadership must know that there is no option to end the crisis except with the political dialogue that the UN adopted and the International community support which seeks a permanent ceasefire, dismantling of militias, and unifying national ranks to counter terrorism and support stability on consensus arena where legislative and presidential elections are held. He reaffirmed the league’s condemnation of external interventions in the Libyan crisis, adding the league rejects external interventions that violate United Nations Security Council resolution.
