Typhoon Soulik Brings Downpours, Strong Winds to Japan

Tokyo, Dhu-AlHijjah 11, 1439, Aug 22, 2018, SPA -- Heavy rain and powerful winds hit southern Japan on Wednesday as Typhoon Soulik was moving up the west side of Kyushu island, the government said. The season's 19th typhoon cut power to about 21,400 homes in southern islands and the southern part of Kyushu as it passed through the region overnight, dpa reported. As of noon (0300 GMT), the typhoon was over the East China Sea, heading towards the Korean Peninsula. It travelled west-north-west at 20 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 144 kph and gusts of 216 kph. Typhoon Cimaron, the season's 20th, was south of the Ogasawara islands, and is projected to hit western Japan Thursday evening.
