Daniel Khalife, the terror suspect who became the subject of an intensive four-day manhunt, has appeared in court charged with escaping from Wandsworth prison. The former British soldier is accused of fashioning a strap to attach himself to the underside of a van leaving the prison – possibly from bedsheets – and going on the run. Khalife was arrested on a canal towpath in west London at 10.41am on Saturday, after being spotted riding a bicycle. It is alleged he absconded from the prison on Wednesday 6 September. Khalife, 21, appeared in court on Monday morning dressed in a grey tracksuit and flanked by two police officers and a dock officer. Three police officers also sat in the well of the court. Khalife spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth. Khalife was in prison after being charged earlier this year with devising a fake bomb, eliciting personnel information from an MoD information system about members of the armed forces “which is of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism”, and breaching the Official Secrets Act by collecting or sharing documents or information that could be “directly or indirectly useful to an enemy”. The court heard allegations that Khalife had been to Richmond Park and Chiswick – both near to Wandsworth prison – while police searched for him. Khalife was originally due to face trial on the terrorism charges in November. He has now been remanded in custody on the further charge of escaping prison, and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on Friday 29 September.
