West Brom remain on top of the Championship after beating Plymouth 1-0 at the Hawthorns. The result did not come easy for Carlos Corberán’s side, who were frustrated after being denied by the post three times in the first half. The hosts thought that they had found the breakthrough when Josh Maja had the ball in the net seconds before half-time, but the flag was immediately raised. But Maja struck again on the hour, keeping his side top. It was a reality check for Wayne Rooney, a week after Plymouth’s fine victory at home to Sunderland. While Sunderland in second sealed derby victory over Middlesbrough thanks to a cool back-heeled finish from teenager Chris Rigg, Burnley sit two points behind them in third thanks to Josh Brownhill’s last gasp winner against Portsmouth. The Clarets had to come from behind to win 2-1 after Callum Lang gave Pompey the lead towards the end of the first half, and they had Jeremy Sarmiento to thank for levelling matters just after the hour. But with the match heading for a frustrating draw and four of the eight minutes of stoppage time on the clock, Brownhill fired a low shot home from the edge of the area to electrify Turf Moor. Gustavo Hamer’s goal was enough to earn fourth-placed Sheffield United a 1-0 victory over Derby and extend their unbeaten start to the league season. Hamer was a constant threat and his fourth goal of the season gave the Blades a third straight win. Leeds returned to winning ways at 10-man Cardiff. Winger Largie Ramazani scored his first goal in English football following his August move from Spanish club Almeria, before substitute Joel Piroe wrapped up a 2-0 victory three minutes from time. Leeds were aided by a straight red card on 23 minutes for the Cardiff defender Joel Bagan, penalised for ending Willy Gnonto’s burst through on goal. Nahki Wells scored a 76th-minute penalty as Bristol City came from behind to beat Oxford 2-1 in an entertaining clash at Ashton Gate. The visitors took a 28th-minute lead when Siriki Dembélé’s driving run drew defenders to him and the ball broke into the box for an unmarked Ruben Rodrigues to volley past Max O’Leary from 12 yards. City were level on 57 minutes through Sinclair Armstrong. Wells’ spot-kick followed a disputed trip by Mark Harris on Haydon Roberts and was ruthlessly dispatched by the experienced striker, who found the top corner with a right-footed rocket. The Norwich head coach, Johannes Hoff Thorup, said his side played their best football since his summer arrival in an emphatic 4-1 home win over Watford. Callum Doyle gave Norwich an early lead and Borja Sainz restored their advantage on the stroke of half-time after Ryan Andrews had equalised for the Hornets. Marcelino Núñez made it a two-goal cushion before substitute Ben Chrisene put the icing on the cake. “I certainly feel we’re moving in the right direction,” said Thorup. “We are not where we want to be yet but this was the best performance since I’ve been here. I was so pleased for the players – it hasn’t always been the case this season but today they were rewarded with three points for a really good performance.” Luton forward Carlton Morris came off the bench to score twice and earn the Hatters a first home win of the season with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Kenilworth Road. It looked like the Owls were going to heap further misery on the Hatters, having led through Barry Bannan’s goal early in the second half. But the Luton manager, Rob Edwards, made an inspired triple substitution, one of them the introduction of Morris, who went on to score twice in the last 15 minutes to give the hosts a first home victory since April. Swansea earned their first points on the road this season by securing a 2-1 victory over Coventry at the CBS Arena. Luke Williams’ side raced into a two-goal lead in the opening half-hour thanks to goals from Liam Cullen and Oli Cooper, before Ronald’s own goal gave Coventry a route back into the match. Millwall’s manager, Neil Harris, was determined to adopt a positive attitude after his side had to settle for a 1-1 draw at QPR. Michael Frey equalised for Rangers five minutes before half-time after Duncan Watmore had opened the scoring. The Lions were the better team yet were unable to find a second goal. “Glass half-full; a dominant display, really good with the ball and created numerous chances,” said Harris. “We’re disappointed not to win the game, obviously, and frustrated would be the right word as well, but glass half-full because it’s been a tough venue for us.”
