Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi expressed his country’s support to unifying Cyprus according to UN resolutions and within a federal system that unites the island peacefully without foreign meddling. He hailed new energy discoveries in the Mediterranean Sea that fall under tripartite cooperation between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece. Official talks were held between Sisi and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades to promote bilateral ties in various fields and a number of regional and international topics of common interest. Sisi embarked on Monday on a two-day visit to Cyprus where he will participate in the fifth Egyptian-Greek-Cypriot tripartite summit, within the tripartite cooperation mechanism that was launched in Cairo in November 2014. During a press conference with Anastasiades, Sisi described the relations between Egypt and Cyprus as strong and historic, thanking him for his country’s previous stances that have always been supportive of Egypt. He also praised Cypriot efforts to support Egypt during the past years and back economic transformations, as well as government plans for economic reforms. The Egyptian president signaled that holding the Egypt-Cyprus Business Forum will contribute in reinforcing dialogue and activating communication between investors from both sides. “Your noble stances and efforts to settle the Cypriot case are highly appreciated by the international community. In this context, I would like to reiterate Egypt’s support to unifying the island of Cyprus, according to UN resolutions, within a federal system that unites the island in peace without any foreign meddling,” Sisi added. Anastasiades said: “This historic visit of Egypt’s president and the convention of the fifth Egyptian-Greek-Cypriot tripartite summit are ample evidence on our determination to consolidate ties.” He stated that bilateral ties in all fields are good, and that several memorandums of understanding were signed to be added to 35 current agreements in economy, business, security and other fields. At the conclusion of talks, Sisi and Anastasiades exchanged highest state Medals of Honor in both countries.
