The Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen fired on Monday a rocket towards Saudi Arabia, but it failed in reaching its target. The ballistic missile was fired from Yemen’s Saada province towards Dhahran al-Janub city in southern Saudi Arabia on Monday afternoon, but it failed to reach its target and fell in Yemeni territory, said Arab coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki. He added that the rocket was deliberately directed towards residential areas. It fell however 1.75 kilometers away from the southern Saudi borders. “This hostile act proves the ongoing involvement of the Iranian regime in supporting the Houthi militias,” he continued. “This is a clear and blatant violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions 2216 and 2231,” Maliki stressed. He accused the Houthis and their backers of seeking to threaten Saudi, regional and international security. The ballistic missile attack came hours after Human Rights Watch accused the Houthis of violating laws of war by indiscriminately firing rockets on populated areas inside Saudi Arabia. On March 25, the militias fired seven ballistic missiles towards the Kingdom. They were intercepted by Saudi air defenses. Shrapnel from one of the rockets killed an Egyptian migrant worker and injured two others in the capital Riyadh. “The Houthis should immediately stop their indiscriminate missile attacks on populated areas of Saudi Arabia,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.
