UN Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths will return to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Wednesday from where he had kicked off fresh efforts to revive the peace process in the war-torn country. The envoy will later travel to New York to attend a Security Council session on April 17 and meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Sources from the Yemen government told Asharq Al-Awsat that the envoy will meet in Riyadh on Wednesday with Yemeni President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi. Griffiths is also expected to hold talks with Gulf officials and western ambassadors in the Saudi capital. “The UN envoy will discuss with those Yemeni officials the outcome of his regional tour and his meetings with several Yemeni parties and regional officials in Sanaa, Muscat and Abu Dhabi during the last three weeks,” the sources said. Next week, Griffiths will present to the Security Council his first report on Yemen, and what indicators he had received from Yemeni and regional parties on resuming talks and reaching a peaceful solution based on the three references. It is still unclear whether concerned Yemeni parties would offer the needed concessions required for reaching a solution in the country, particularly in the presence of a stringent Houthi stance. The militias had previously foiled several UN attempts to reach peace in Yemen. However, western and international parties were optimistic about Griffiths’ mission, based on his previous experience in ending armed conflicts and his understanding of the Yemen crisis. Last month, the diplomat had met Yemeni officials from the legitimate government before heading to Sanaa where he stayed for eight days to meet with Houthis and members of the General People’s Congress Party. Griffiths later traveled to Muscat where he met with the Omani official in charge of foreign affairs, Yousef bin Alawi bin Abdullah to address the stances of the regional stakeholders. In Oman, the UN envoy said he sensed a "real desire for achieving peace and hold political negotiations to stop the war and end the Yemeni people suffering.” Griffiths’ difficult mission also included meetings with UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi, where he also met with leaders of Yemens Southern Transitional Council.
