The meetings of Arab Ministers of Information will kick off in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss a set of recommendations related to the role of media in countering terrorism and serving Arab interests, according to the results of the Arab Summit held recently in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. During his presidency of the 9th session of the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Ministers of Communication and Information Technology, Saudi Minister of Culture and Information Awwad al-Awwad, called for a media plan to confront terrorism and extremism, focusing on combating violence and Iranian interference in the affairs of Arab countries. In this context, the Minister called for the establishment of an integrated Arab media plan to combat extremism and terrorism that strikes most of the Arab countries, pointing out that the media has a role in protecting lives from terrorism by spreading a culture of peace and love. Awwad said the Kingdom supports all efforts to reach a political solution to the crisis in Yemen in a manner that ensures its unity, independence and territorial integrity. He added: “The Kingdom also welcomes the statement issued by the United Nations Security Council, which strongly condemned the launching of more than 132 Iranian-made ballistic missiles by Houthi militias against Saudi cities. The Kingdom affirms its commitment to provide humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people.” "This makes it clear to the world that we are facing a very great danger, which is the danger of Iranian interference in Arab countries in a manner that has become a threat to the security of all countries,” he said. The minister stressed the Kingdom’s commitment to provide humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people through a comprehensive humanitarian operations plan. On the Palestinian issue, Awwad remarked: “It is still our primary issue and will remain so until the Palestinian people gain all their legitimate rights, foremost of which is the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.” “From this perspective, it is our duty to promote joint Arab media work to highlight the Palestinian cause, as well as the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and the suffering of Jerusalem and its people,” he said. Awwad drew attention to the adoption by the Arab Summit of a global media plan to counter the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This plan includes programs and initiatives prepared by the secretariat aimed at highlighting all aspects of the Palestinian cause. Arab League Assistant Secretary-General for Media Affairs Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh confirmed that the recommendations of the Executive Office will be submitted to the meeting of the Council scheduled for Wednesday at the headquarters of the Arab League. The Executive Office concluded its work on Tuesday, where it welcomed the international media plan adopted by the Arab Summit to address the unilateral US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The Office also stressed the importance of supporting the Palestinian cause, calling on the Arab information ministries or concerned parties to emphasize the centrality of the Palestinian cause for the Arab nation. The Office agreed to hold round table talks entitled "Jerusalem in the Eyes of the Media" as a slogan for the Media Excellence Award at the next Arab Media Day 2019. It recommended selecting the theme "The Role of Arab Media in Promoting Society and Devoting the Values of Labor and Renaissance", proposed by Morocco as a theme for the 49th session of Council of Arab Ministers of Information, while also maintaining the theme of "Community Awareness to Counter Extremist Ideology and Terrorism" as the main theme.
