The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has urged the United Nations to commit itself to the realization of the principles required by the concept of culture of peace. This came at the Kingdoms speech before a high-level forum on the culture of peace at the UN in New York on Thursday. The speech was delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative of the Saudi Mission to the UN Dr. Khaled Manzalawi. Dr Manzalawi stated that the world is currently experiencing an outbreak of violence at all levels. "The Israeli occupation continues its violent practices against the Palestinians, the Myanmar authorities are practicing ethnic cleansing and official violence against the Muslim Rohingyas, Iran is exporting terrorism and culture of violence to Lebanon, Yemen and other world countries and Assad is practicing the worst violence against the Syrian people,” he said. “Migrants across the seas and oceans face maritime violence and the ruthlessness of reception in many countries, and humanity continues to fight violence stemming from poverty, ignorance, disease and terrorism,” Manzalawi added. He stressed that the Kingdom has been working to spread peace and support humanitarian and relief work in various parts of the world. Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian contributions over the past 30 years have amounted to more than $115 billion, he explained, adding that it is also exerting efforts to consolidate the principle of dialogue and coexistence through its contribution to the establishment of many regional and international institutions. Among these institutions are King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Center for Inter-religious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID), United Nations Counter-Terrorism Center (UNCCT), Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology (GCCEI), King Salman Center for International Peace and the Ideological Warfare Center. The Kingdom also participates in the worlds largest voluntary work to promote peace through the "Messengers of Peace" program with the World Scout Fund, which is jointly sponsored by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and King of Sweden King Carl XVI Gustaf, Honorary President of the World Scout Fund all over the world. Manzalawi said that the culture of peace in Saudi Arabia is based on three major pillars, which are justice, development and protection of human rights. Peace can not last or spread unless it is accompanied by achieving justice for peoples and individuals, he said, adding that it can not be compatible with poverty and lack of development. Peace is also worthless in the absence of human dignity and disregard for rights, especially the right to decent living and to get rid of poverty, ignorance and disease, the official further noted.
