Pakistan-India peace talks resume

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 20, SPA -- India andPakistan resumed peace talks Tuesday, Associated Press reported. Sivshankar Menon, the top civil servant at the IndianForeign ministry, met with his Pakistani counterpart SalmanBashir in Islamabad to review the four rounds of talks heldsince the peace process began in early 2004. The two countries' foreign ministers were scheduled tomeet Wednesday. A statement from Pakistan said the two sides will discussissues including Kashmir, the two countries' militarystandoff at the high-altitude Siachen Glacier, terrorismand drug trafficking _ as well as economic cooperation. Officials will also «deliberate on how to address theoutstanding issues in a more meaningful way,» thestatement said. During his stay in Pakistan, Indian External AffairsMinister Pranab Mukherjee will meet with Prime MinisterYousuf Raza Gilani and President Pervez Musharraf. Pakistan's state news agency reported that Mukherjee mightalso meet Asif Ali Zardari, the chief of the main coalitionparty seen as the power behind the prime minister, as wellas ex-premier Nawaz Sharif, chief of the junior party inthe coalition.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/557541
