ISLAMABAD, NOVEMBER 23, SPA -- Pakistan's Supreme Court Friday upheld the imposition of the state of emergency and suspension of the Constitution by General Pervez Musharraf on November 3, court officials said. The court order pronounced by a ten-justice panel presided over by Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar said that the Pakistan Army Chief (Musharraf) was left with no option but to impose the emergency because of the growing terrorist attacks and interference of a few judges of the apex court in the executive's domain. The panel held hearing on different petitions challenging the emergency for a week. The order said that the law and order situation was worst that needed steps to improve. It directed that the emergency should be lifted after the improvement of the situation and the country should be governed in accordance with the Constitution as far as it was possible. According to the ruling, the Supreme Court can again review its decision on emergency if it felt a need for it. It said that the president should lift the emergency when he thought it was no more required.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/502464
