FIVE PEOPLE KILLED IN CLASHES IN INDIA’S PART OF KASHMIR

SRINAGAR, INDIA, AUG 1, SPA -- THREE SECURITY PERSONNEL AND TWO SUSPECTED REBELS WERE KILLED IN SEPARATEGUNBATTLES IN INDIA’S PART OF KASHMIR ON TUESDAY, POLICESAID. THE TWO REBELS WERE KILLED AFTER SOLDIERS AND POLICEACTING ON A TIP CORDONED OFF THE VILLAGE OF CHATIPORA INSOUTHWESTERN KASHMIR, SPARKING A GUNBATTLE, SAID POLICE OFFICER NITISH KUMAR. A POLICEMAN WAS ALSO KILLED IN THE FIGHT, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTED. CHATIPORA IS ABOUT 65 KILOMETERS (40 MILES) SOUTH OFSRINAGAR, THE MAIN CITY OF INDIA’S JAMMU-KASHMIR STATE. MEANWHILE, TWO PARAMILITARY TROOPERS WERE KILLED WHEN REBELS OPENED FIRE ON THEM IN SRINAGAR, POLICE SAID. THE TROOPERS WERE PATROLLING SRINAGAR’S DALGATE AREA WHEN THE REBELS FIRED, KILLING ONE TROOPER AND FATALLY WOUNDING THE OTHER, SAID FAROOQ AHMED, THE DEPUTY INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE.
