Gauhati, Oct 10, SPA -- Suspected ethnic militia membershacked to death nine people from a rival tribe and burneddown nearly 200 houses as violence continued in India'sremote northeast, police said Monday. The raid raised to 17 the number of Karbi tribe memberskilled since early Saturday, when nearly 150 attackersopened fire on sleeping villagers in Assam state's Bagmariregion. Eight died in the attack. A second wave of assaults came Sunday, when nine peoplewere killed and 200 homes torched in a cluster of a dozenhamlets, said D.D. Tripathi, a Bagmari civil administrationofficial. He said the killers wore Indian army uniforms, according to a report of The Associated Press.
