Washington, March 26, SPA -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice criticized Israel for planning to expand a settlement on the West Bank because it is "at odds with American policy" and could threaten progress towards peace with the Palestinians. Rice made the comment in an interview with Los Angeles Times concerning Israel's plan to build 3,500 housing units in the Maale Adumim settlement. "We have noted our concerns to the Israelis," Rice told the newspaper. Earlier this week, David Welch, the assistant secretary fro Near Eastern Affairs, and Deputy National Security Adviser Elliot Abrams met with Israeli officials to learn more about the settlement plan. Rice noted that progress has been made in the Middle East peace process and expressed confidence in Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to work with Israel. She called on other nations to help rebuild the Palestinian economy. Israel's plan to withdraw from Gaza represents a significant chance for bringing peace to the region, Rice said. She also criticized Israel for building a security fence. "We will continue to note that this settlement expansion is at odds with … American policy," she added.--SPA1311 Local Time 1011 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/249872
