New Delhi, Shawwal 16, 1436, Aug 1, 2015, SPA -- At least 20 people died in a landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains in north-eastern India, police said Saturday. The deaths occurred at a village in Manipur state's Chandel district, dpa quoted regional police chief Hirojit Singh as saying. "Six to seven houses came under the landslide and the village authorities informed us of about 20 casualties," Singh said by phone. Rescue teams were dispatched to the village. Manipur has witnessed incessant rains in recent days, washing away bridges and roads while rendering thousands homeless. India's monsoon rains usually hit between June and September, and are vital for agriculture but also cause hundreds of deaths each year. Weather authorities have forecast more rains in the region over the next couple of days. --SPA 19:58 LOCAL TIME 16:58 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
