Aden, Ramadan 01, 1437, June 06, 2016, SPA -- National Committee on Investigation of Allegations of Human Rights Violations in Yemen has condemned the shelling of residential neighborhoods with heavy weapons, which are internationally banned, and called for the immediate cessation of military actions in Taiz province and allowing relief teams access to events' sites to recover the bodies, move the wounded and enter medical and humanitarian assistance. The committee called for facilitating the work of its field team that are inspecting the affected areas. In a statement yesterday, the committee expressed regret for the violations which affected civilians in residential neighborhoods that were bombed and killed and wounded 73 civilians so far, including 14 children and 9 women, according to initial reports received by the committee, stressing that this is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, which criminalizes endangering civilians and direct reprisals to them and which is considered as violation of the principle of humane treatment and protection of the dignity of human beings. The statement added that on the basis of the responsibility of the committee to investigate allegations of human rights violations in the follow-up of the humanitarian situation in Yemen and its development on the ground, especially flash areas where civilians of both sexes of children, women and the elderly have been killed; and because of the special situation experienced by the province of Taiz and the regrettable and bloody events experienced by the province in the previous days from June 2 to June 5, 2016, the committee commissioned a team of legal specialists to go to the events' sites for monitoring and collecting initial data and interviewing victims and their families and witnesses. -- SPA 01:20 LOCAL TIME 22:20 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
