United Nations, Dhu-AlHijjah 20, 1435, Oct 14, 2014, SPA -- The death rate in the Ebola epidemic has risen to 70 percent and there could be up to 10,000 new cases a week in two months, while the outbreak still is expanding geographically in the three most affected West African countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday. WHO Assistant Director-General Bruce Aylward said the 70 percent death rate was “a high mortality disease” in any circumstance and that the U.N. health agency still was focused on trying to get sick people isolated and provide treatment as early as possible. WHO previously estimated the death rate at about 50 percent. Doctor Aylward told reporters in Geneva that if the world response to the Ebola crisis is not intensified within 60 days, “a lot more people will die” and there will be a huge need to address the spiraling numbers of cases. --SPA 21:28 LOCAL TIME 18:28 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
