BEIJING, Ramadan 22, 1435, Jul 19, 2014, SPA -- A powerful typhoon has killed eight people in southern China after claiming 77 lives in the Philippines. China's official Xinhua News Agency says five people died and 99 were injured after Typhoon Rammasun hit Hainan island Friday off the country's southern coast. Three later died in the Guangxi region as the storm plowed into the mainland on its way north to Vietnam. Xinhua reported that wind speeds reached 216 kilometers per hour (130 miles per hour). According to AP, Chinese authorities say Rammasun is the biggest typhoon to hit southern China in 41 years, after wreaking havoc in the Philippines earlier in the week. Authorities in southern China ordered the highest level of disaster alert and suspended hundreds of buses, trains and flights across the region. --SPA 13:38 LOCAL TIME 10:38 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
