Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir stated on Tuesday that the Kingdom was prepared to shoulder its share of the financial cost of its involvement with its allies as part of a broader coalition on Syria. Discussions are underway over the nature of forces that should be deployed in eastern Syria, he revealed during a joint press conference with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Riyadh. “We have been engaged with discussions with the United States since the eruption of the crisis.” The talks have also addressed the possibility of sending troops to Syria, he said. Jubeir emphasized that the proposal to send its troops as part of a broader international coalition was "not new". This proposal was made to the administration of then President Barack Obama. It said that if Washington was prepared to deploy troops in Syria, then the Kingdom would also study the possibility of sending its own forces. On the financial cost, Jubeir stressed that Saudi Arabia was always a generous partner with the US, dating back to the war to liberate Kuwait. It has also played a role in the flight ban over some regions in Iraq. “We will continue to play our role,” he continued. Talks between Jubeir and Guterres focused on Saudi Arabia’s ties with the UN. He noted that the Kingdom was one of the founding nations of the organization and places great importance on its ties with it. Discussions also addressed the Syrian crisis and proposal to end the suffering of the people in line with the Geneva I declaration and UN Security Council resolution 2254. The conflicts in Yemen and Libya were also covered, as well as Iran’s negative meddling in the region. For his part, Guterres denied the existence of tensions between the UN and Saudi Arabia, saying that dialogue between the two sides has always been “open and constructive.” He noted a marked improvement in delivering aid to Yemen as part of the Comprehensive Humanitarian Operations. “We have a long way to go to offer more aide,” he told reporters. Earlier, Guterres had met in the Saudi capital with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz.
